Gigantochloa apus, commonly known as Apus bamboo or black bamboo, is a large and robust bamboo species native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and parts of Thailand. It is a clumping bamboo that grows in dense, tight clusters, making it an excellent choice for privacy screens, windbreaks, and ornamental landscapes. Gigantochloa apus is renowned for its towering height, with mature plants reaching up to 8 to 30 meters, and culms that can grow up to 4 to 13 cm in diameter.

The culms of Gigantochloa apus are one of the species' most distinctive features. Initially green, the culms mature to a deep, rich brown or black color, which is why it is often referred to as black bamboo. This striking appearance makes it a popular choice for decorative landscaping, where the dark-colored stems add a dramatic, exotic element to gardens, parks, and naturalistic settings. The culms are strong and rigid, making them suitable for construction, particularly for lightweight structures such as fences, gates, and trellises.

The leaves of Gigantochloa apus are broad and dark green, contributing to its dense, leafy canopy. This dense foliage provides shade and is often used to create privacy screens or to shield outdoor areas from wind and noise. Due to its fast growth and ability to form thick clumps, Gigantochloa apus is ideal for areas where rapid establishment of a green barrier or screen is needed.

This species is not only valuable for its ornamental and landscaping uses but also for its practical applications. The strong, durable culms are used in the construction of furniture, flooring, and even as scaffolding in some regions. Additionally, Gigantochloa apus produces edible young shoots that are consumed in various Asian cuisines, adding a culinary benefit to the bamboo.
